Happy memories of Ilford. The walk through Valentines Park to the ground after getting off the 169 or 179. It used to be quite picturesque as I recall. Doubt it now. It's probably a mosque.

And although I have nothing against Chelmsford, there used to be other outlying grounds they used. Westcliff, Southend, Brentwood, Leyton & Colchester. It was lovely going there as well.

I played the odd game at Ilford for my club Clayhall. But Essex matches were looked forward to with anticipation. The mobile scoreboard, the refreshment tents. Buying your own scorecard and filling it in like the cricket geek I was and still am tbh.

As I say. Halcyon days. Ones that won't return sadly.

As Ron Manager would say....

'Small boys on the outfield ? Before the game starts. Tennis ball and a rucksack for the wicket ? Opening your packed lunch ? Ham sandwiches again Mum ? Getting an adult to buy you beer ? Calling Geoff Boycott a cunt ?'

Marvellous.
