West Ham during Queen Elizabeth II's 70 Year Reign

Post by Ibbyham »

When Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1953 (1 year after she became a Queen). West Ham were in Division 2 in 1952-53 season under then Manager, Ted Fenton, finishing off 14th place, a far cry to where we are now. Youth players started to get stronger with Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters started their youth career.

During Queen Elizabeth II's 70 Years reign that see West Ham:

Division 2 champions - TWICE in 1957-58 and 1980-81
3 x FA Cup in 1964, 1975 and 1980 with runner-up in 2006.
5 x promotions from Division 2
2 x League Cup runner-up in 1966 and 1981
3rd place in First Division our best finishing position in 1985-86
15 x managers during those 70 years with the first 3 from 1952 to 1989.
Won the World Cup in 1966 with 3 key West Ham players played their part, in Moore, Hurst and Peters.
Won European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 at Wembley and runner-up in 1976.
Premier League was born in 1992 which West Ham entered in 1993 and 5th place was our best.

Will West Ham achieved something under King Charles III?

I remember Lizzie leading the charge towards a group of hook nosed one's at seven sisters station.
"One will have it with you" she screamed before charging up the stairs, stick in one hand, corgi tucked under the other.
Several heebies had it on their toes, as this diminutive screaming woman tore in to them.
" Come and have a go if one thinks one's hard enough" she belowed before delivering an uppercut to a beaked one.
"Unhand me you blagard, I'll have you in the tower" she screeched as 5 policemen strongarmed her in to a van, to be driven away to the local nick.
A fine lady indeed and definitely one to be missed.
R.I.P ma'am.
Love a cup of Rosey I do.

Indeed.

I've been told a tale well known up there by my friends at the Etihad about a red Manc wannabe left in a pool of his own shit with a card saying 'One has just met the ICF' on it.

God bless Your Majesty.

Indeed as nowaday football is so different than when Elizabeth became a Queen in 1952 as football wasn't about money those day.

But it was still about 11 blokes on each team running around trying to kick a ball into a goal. And there was still a bloke with a whistle, probably doing his best to be the centre of attraction. But the pitches back then would, I imagine, be more resemblant of the Thames Estuary mudflats when the tide was out.

And I bet the fans you see on those old film clips holding their wooden rattles and grinning gormlessly without teeth into a bloody camera would still be calling for the manager to be sacked if they lost a few games on the spin. I've always wondered why everyone, even the bloody kids, in those photos nearly all wore bloody caps. As well as having less than the usual amount of teeth.

Difference was back then the club was usually owned by a local businessman so if you didn't like the way the team was playing you could pop into whatever pub he owned and let him have both barrels.
