Fornals,Noble and Soucek all interchanging against Villa so defending shared by those three.
Fornals had plenty of chances to shine. Not Noble holding him back
He's well worth his starting place and contributes more than the flaky alternatives.
His positioning when covering lb has been outstanding in the run-in, it's the reason we've barely seen a peep out of fit again Anderson. Noticed again this weekend how quickly we transitioned from attack to good defensive shape, Soucek, Rice, Fornals, Noble and Bowen all had a good idea what their jobs were at both ends of the pitch. This credit has to got to Moyes, it was something severely lacking under Pellegrini.
Fornals is linking nicely with his passing too, started a few moves that led to goals and I think he's going to be a piece to slot into a creative mid, but must be surrounded by like players. His link-up and almost 6 th sense understanding with Cebellos in the U21 WC was fun to watch and I would love to see him continue his growth with our squad.
So, we sign a young, attacking Spanish midfielder........because he's 'outstanding' at covering the left back.

I really have heard it all now.
Because you never got picked to play, you really don’t understand the role of a midfielder. Since when did West Ham have a bevy of forward players that had no defensive duties. Also if you really watched West Ham this season you will know how Lb has been an area of concern. Fornals has equipped himself well on both ends of the pitch & even though that doesn’t fit with your narrative of what he's supposed to be, it doesn’t make you original assessment any less misguided.
I must confess the ability of Fornals to mask the fact that we have a shit left-back has a certain similarity to Shrek's statement that 'Wor Andy was the best defensive centre-forward in the country, and Carlton Cole before him.
That Vardy. He's fucking useless at heading away corners.

2 goals, 5 assists 78.8 pass success rate is an improvement.
work in progress.
Garnett, I respect you as a 'proper' West Ham fan, one of the few on here, and you're better than just posting stats to justify a player.
Say what you see not read.
I will say he is worse than players we've had in the position he often plays, who were not all that, like Mark Robson, Matty Holmes, Keith Rowland.
Morning,
I didn`t post the stats to justify the player, there is a steady improvement in his performances imo, but far from my expectation level, the jury is still out for me but if this season he knuckles down and improves his all round game further he will finally justify his starting position.

He looked impressive during the Under 21 championships last summer. He was sometimes used wide but looked best when he played a sort of Lampard role in the centre of midfield. Noble imo has been very good in his more advanced role but, as age takes it's toll, maybe Fornals will be used more in that role than the deeper one he has been asked to play. Not a spectacular player but imo will prove to be a valuable asset. Needs to work on his finishing because he is a player who should be netting 10 goals plus each season from midfield.
And off topic. There was a comment or two about Nathan Trott on another thread. Wondered if you know what happened to him at Wimbledon. One minute he was being hailed as the best keeper in League One, the next he'd apparently lost his place in their first team.

Good assessment.
Wide midfielders have to defend.
Some cant and can only keep their places if their attacking play is outstanding. I dont think it's a coincidence that Anderson's form plummeted at the same time as a greater contribution to defence was demanded.

Or Anderson was using us as a stepping stone to a bigger club, which would explain his mostly good performances in his first season.
Either way if he has decided he wants out, he hasn't exactly put himself in the shop window.

Except Wor Andy and Vardy don't play in Fornal's position, they're both No.9s Fornal's ain't!
