The Captain

Post by Taansend »

Not our current one, just in general.

How important do you think a captain is to the team/squad?

Are they the most important player on the pitch?

What qualities would be top choices for you if you were a manager?

And who, from the Premier League era, epitomises what you would want most in your choice? Not just West Ham, football in general.

Roy Keane,John Terry and Tony Adams come to mind.

I think our best captains of the PL era were Nolan and Lucas Neill.

By the way,Lucas's 16 year old son is meant to be some Goal scoring prospect,Marcus. His at Liverpool, but City want to sign him.

Why just the PL?Sure Football started before then, though Sky and a lot of the media make out it didn't.

Tony Adam's based his captaincy skills on Bonzo. He always quoted him on being the best skipper ever.

To my mind , Bondsy and Adams type players are the ones that spring to mind.

Curiously pretty much (yeah I know Bill was at Charlton for a while) one club players

I wonder if the majority on any “list” would also be ?

Footie is a team game where the Captain also has to be able to “play a bit” (allegedly :D) though.

In Cricket , say , some Captains are picked for their captaincy skills alone.
Mike Brearley being a classic example.

There have been some so called great captains - Billy Bonds, Steve Perryman, Bryan Robson - but they have absolutely no influence on results through their captaincy.
Captains change nothing in a team.
If a team is winning the atmosphere is great, if they are losing it's terrible.

Captains are just coin tossers who do not affect anything within a team or club.

I don't understand.

If captains are so important, how come we got relegated with Bonds as ours?

Back in the day, before "Snowflake Society",a captain would kick his players up the arse,if they wasn't performing or at least giving it 100%.

Maybe now,the captain has less of an effect.

Steve Perryman

Speaks volumes.
It’s not what you do it is the way that you do it.
